How to adjust bike brakes rubbing – There are two most common types of brakes for bicycles: the disc brake and the brake v-brake. In this post, we’ll talk just about the v-brake brake, it is what we use on our bikes. Besides having a simpler maintenance, it is cheaper than a disc brake, and, when properly regulated, is very efficient, especially in dry weather. On rainy days, the braking distance will be greater, therefore, reduce speed and apply the brakes early and gently.

The operation of a v-brake is simple. The brake lever, when activated, pulls a cord that connects to the brake arms. Thus, the distance between each arm decreases, and shoes abut the rim of the bike, stopping the wheels by friction.

A pair of common brake shoes cost around 10 reais and can be found on any bike shop around the world. The rubber shoe is worn with use, is necessary to change from time to time.

Regularly check how worn are the shoes of your bike. If they are worn until the grooves are no longer visible, they must be replaced. The following photo shows a new shoe and one worn.

If your brake still has a lot to spend, also check that it is clean and well regulated. Dirt as clay and sand, which can accumulate between the shoe and the rim also lead to premature wear of parts. By pushing the brake lever, the pads should touch the rim at the same time and the bike should stop almost instantly, without making noises.

Installation and replacement brake shoes

1. Connect the brake arm on the bike using the central hole and secure the brake with the screw installation.
(For replacement of shoes, the brake cable release and remove the old shoes using an Allen wrench 5mm. Hop then to step 2.)

2. Check the direction of fixing shoes, they come with markings that indicate the side ( left or right ). To secure the shoe on the brake arm, they are used several washers and lock nut at the end. This set allows the adjustment of shoes at different angles. It is important that the distance (A) highlighted in the figure below, is 32mm or more. Therefore, depending on the width of the frame, front suspension or the rim may be necessary to change the position of the washers B (thick and thin). Let the shoes parallel to the rim, without touching the tires. With actuated brake lever, leaving the shoe against the rim, tighten the lock nut.

3. Pass the brake cable through the guide and the fixing screw. Make sure that the cable is positioned between the washer and the arm so that it is not damaged when receiving the clamping screw. Adjust the gap so that the gap between the left and right shoes and the rim is 2 mm in total and tighten the fixing screw.

4 . Make sure each shoe touches the rim at the same time when the brake is applied, and the spacing between shoe and rim is 1 mm when the brake is not engaged. If it does not, you need to adjust the spring tension screws. The tighter the bolt, that the greater the spring tension arm away from the rim.
